LOTUS GLOSSARY

 

This page is designed to help the white belt student with words heard in class.  The exact spelling may differ slightly from school to school, but the pronunciation should be similar.

 

 

COMMON WORDS AND COMMANDS:

AJARN

 The term LOTUS students use to address the teacher.  It is the Japanese equivalent to "sensei".

BALOY

 Jump/spring forward flip.

BIT

 Change cover stances

CROP

 Kneeling bow

JUT QUAR

 Right cover stance.  The left foot is forward and the right foot is behind the body.

JUT JIN QUAR

 Right fighting/guard stance.  Both knees are bent and the hands are up protecting the face and body.

JUT SIGH

 Left cover stance.  The right foot is forward and the left foot is behind the body.

JUT JIN SIGH

 Left fighting/guard stance.  Both knees are bent and the hands are up protecting the face and body.

KIBA DACHI

 Japanese for "horse riding stance".  This stance is used to build leg strength while students practice hand strikes and blocks.

KONG

 Standing bow

LEFT COVER  The right foot is forward and the left foot is behind the body.
LEFT GUARD  Left leg is back, both knees are bent and the hands are up protecting the face and body.
RIGHT COVER  The left foot is forward and the right foot is behind the body.
RIGHT GUARD  Right leg is back, both knees are bent and the hands are up protecting the face and body.

TDREAM

 Kiba dachi (horse riding stance).  This stance is used to build leg strength while students practice hand strikes & blocks.

TDRON

 To stand erect

MASTER DRILLS:

DOK BOA DANG  An exercise that takes the static movements from the "tream" or "kiba dachi" exercises and makes them dynamic.
MON GON TEON  A combination of blocks, strikes, and kicks that begins after a series of forward and backward rolls.
PAYAK HEARN        This is the first kata students learn and is often referred to as the "Slide movement Kata."
